The mid-size SUV class in Australia is highly competitive, offering lots of appealing choices for buyers. To help sort through the crowd, the CarsGuide 2026 Car of the Year judges picked three standouts that deliver a strong mix of quality, practicality and value, all starting under $60 000.
Honda’s ZR-V sits in the lineup between the smaller HR-V and the larger CR-V. Its size is a sweet spot for families who want a roomy interior without going too big. The judges liked how the ZR-V balances comfort, build quality and versatility.
Drivers have the choice of a conventional petrol engine and a fuel-efficient hybrid, with the hybrid version offering stronger performance. However, the hybrid isn’t widely available across all trims, and prices start slightly higher than some rivals.
Even though the RAV4 model evaluated is nearing the end of its current lifecycle, it still impressed the panel with its dependable blend of features, especially its popular hybrid setup.
The RAV4 is praised for its spacious, user-friendly cabin and solid reputation for reliability, all qualities that have made it a top choice for many Australian families. The judges did note its interior styling feels a bit dated compared with some newer competitors.
The Zeekr 7X, a fully electric SUV from a newer Chinese brand, grabbed the top spot among these medium SUVs. It arrives in Australia at a price that undercuts many rivals while offering premium touches usually found in more expensive cars.
The Zeekr stands out for its roomy interior, stylish design, strong driving range and advanced electrical architecture, including fast-charging capability. While some aspects of its digital systems are overly complex and it lacks a spare tyre, its overall value and performance impressed the judges the most.
