EV sales bounce back to nearly 12% of Australian market, led by Tesla, BYD and Zeekr

Electric vehicle sales in Australia rebounded strongly in February, with battery and plug‑in electric models making up close to 12% of all new car registrations after a slower start to the year. Data from industry bodies shows that EV uptake increased sharply compared with January, rising from about 8.4% to roughly 11.8–12.2% of total new‑vehicle sales in the month.

Strong Performances from Key Brands

Several manufacturers drove this rebound, led by electric models from Tesla, BYD, and Zeekr.

  • Tesla’s Model Y was the best‑selling EV in February with strong monthly figures.
  • BYD’s Sealion 7 and Zeekr 7X also featured prominently among the top sellers.
  • Other popular models included the Tesla Model 3, Geely EX5, and MG MG4.

Market Trends and Growth

EV sales in February represented a significant jump from the same month last year, when electric cars accounted for less than 6% of new‑car sales, highlighting a fast‑paced shift toward electrified vehicles in Australia.

Both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug‑in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw strong year‑on‑year growth, with plug‑in hybrids increasing by more than 20% compared with February 2025.

China Becomes Top Source for New Vehicles

February’s figures also marked a milestone for vehicle origins: for the first time, Chinese‑built vehicles- including those from brands like BYD and Zeekr, as well as Tesla models manufactured there- were the largest source of new cars sold in Australia, surpassing Japanese imports.
