Volvo Cars set out almost a century ago to make better, safer cars. For the next hundred years our aim remains unchanged – but the underlying technology is rapidly shifting.
That’s increasingly reflected in the cars Volvo is bringing to market globally, launching a series of new all-electric models designed and built on dedicated platforms that distil and share innovation across the range, and get better over time thanks to over-the-air software updates.
All of which keeps drivers – and all road users – safer, while moving towards fully electric mobility in the understated luxury that defines Volvo Cars.
Volvo EX30: Small but mighty
In 2024, Volvo Cars began shipping the all-electric EX30, our smallest ever SUV, designed to have a lower carbon footprint, thanks to higher use of recycled steel and aluminium – and Volvo’s engineers rethinking and refining every small detail. Which is why the EX30 last year won the ‘Best of the Best’ Red Dot design awards, swiftly amassing more than 20 prestigious awards across the globe.
Reduced footprint – both the car’s physical size and its environmental impact – does not mean compromise. It’s packed with features, tech and luxuries as standard, housed within an interior that won Gold at the Automotive Design for Best Interior at the 2024 Australian Good Design Awards.
The EX30 is also Volvo’s quickest car to date, with the twin motor version capable of sprinting 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds, while one-pedal driving and regenerative braking help maximise energy efficiency, especially within urban traffic.
For drivers keen to mix city driving with weekend adventure, the more rugged, higher-riding EX30 Cross Country now presents an even mightier small SUV option.
EX90 & ES90: Luxuriously large
In late 2024, Volvo Cars followed up with the EX90, our largest all-electric SUV, designed to be the safest car Volvo has ever built – a ‘Swedish living room on wheels’ capable of carrying seven people in comfort.
Volvo’s mild hybrid petrol and PHEV XC90 has long been the hallmark of the stylish, understated large luxury SUV, and the EX90 continues to carry the flag. Judges at Wheels deem it to be not only the best large electric SUV in its class, but the best large SUV full stop, this year rating the EX90 more highly than any other model, petrol, diesel or electric.
Packed with safety features, including cutting-edge radars and cameras that help detect potential risks inside and outside the car, and loaded with the latest technology, including an incredible Abbey Road Mode-enabled Bowers & Wilkins sound system and 5G connectivity, the EX90 is also powerfully smooth. It can cover up to 570km on a single charge, with no tailpipe emissions – and if required, sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds.
Meanwhile, the first all-electric ES90 will soon make a quiet but powerfully luxurious statement on Australia’s roads. The most aerodynamic car Volvo has ever produced, the ES90 is in a class of its own, combining the refined elegance of a sedan, the adaptability of a fastback, and the spacious interior and higher ground clearance associated with SUVs.
In terms of core computing capacity, it is also the most powerful car Volvo has ever built, which means better performance, better experience and better safety. All wrapped in Scandinavian luxury, with a driving range of up to 700km, and capable of adding 300km of range in just 10 minutes thanks to new 800v charging technology.
All three models are built upon dedicated all-electric system architectures and production lines, while software functionality and user experience are also being continuously improved and then upgraded over-the-air. Not just for our newest customers either – Volvo’s latest and largest OTA update will mean better driving experiences for more than a million owners, with upgrades for eligible cars stretching back to 2020, when Volvo first started shipping the XC40 Recharge, now badged as the EX40.
Which is true to Volvo Cars’ original mission: better cars and safer roads for all. That enduring principle is embedded across our product line-up, from smallest, to largest, and everything in between.
PHEVs: Easing the transition
For drivers not yet ready to make the switch to fully electric vehicles, Volvo Cars can also ease the transition via PHEV models that our data suggests are now being driven in pure electric mode for half of the kilometres they cover.
Hence cars like the XC60 PHEV and XC90 PHEV can deliver the best of both worlds, with an electric range of up to 89km and 77km respectively, reducing tailpipe emissions and fossil fuel consumption.
A trusted brand
With almost a century of commitment to quality, safety and continuous innovation, Volvo Cars now looks forward to the next century – and a world in which accidents become a thing of the past.
