BYD Unveils New Ultra‑Fast Blade Battery That Charges in Minutes

Chinese electric vehicle and battery giant BYD has revealed its second‑generation Blade Battery, showcasing an extremely rapid charging capability when paired with the company’s latest “Flash Charging” system. According to the firm, the updated battery can go from about 10% to 70% charged in around 5 minutes, and reach up to 97% in roughly 9 minutes under normal conditions. In very cold environments (as low as –30 °C), the battery still manages a near‑full charge in about 12 minutes.

This latest battery uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, retaining strong safety performance while improving charging speeds dramatically. The technology requires specially designed high‑power charging stations capable of delivering very high output- BYD’s new chargers can supply up to 1,500 kW of power, significantly faster than most existing public chargers.

BYD plans to expand its proprietary Flash Charging network, initially across China, with thousands of new charging points featuring distinctive T‑shaped gantries to support rapid, high‑volume charging. Several upcoming models will include this new battery and charging tech, including luxury and high‑range vehicles such as the Denza Z9 GT, which BYD claims can exceed 1,000 km of range on a single charge when equipped with the updated system.

The announcement marks a major push by BYD to address one of the biggest hurdles for electric vehicles- long charging times- and could make EVs much more convenient for long‑distance travel, particularly in markets where fast, high‑power charging infrastructure becomes widespread.
