BYD Raises Global Expansion Goals With 24% Growth Target

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has outlined plans to accelerate its overseas growth in 2026, setting a target of selling about 1.3 million vehicles outside China.

Company leadership expects international deliveries to increase by roughly 24% compared with 2025, when BYD sold just over 1.046 million vehicles abroad.

The automaker’s global presence has expanded quickly in recent years. Exports reached 417,000 vehicles in 2024, representing growth of more than 150%, and Australia alone accounted for over 50,000 sales in 2025, highlighting the country as a key market.

BYD has also surpassed Tesla in worldwide EV sales and is widely expected to maintain momentum, particularly as Tesla concentrates more heavily on autonomous driving technology and its Full Self-Driving software.

Rapid Expansion in Australia

The brand’s local rise began with the launch of the Atto 3 electric SUV in 2022, notable at the time for being significantly cheaper than competing models such as the Tesla Model Y.

Since then, BYD has broadened its Australian lineup with vehicles including the Dolphin hatchback, the Seal sedan, the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid, and the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute. Strong preorder numbers helped push the company further into the mainstream market.

By 2025, the entry-level Dolphin variant was priced from $29,990, making it the country’s most affordable electric vehicle at the time. Meanwhile, the Sealion 7 SUV quickly climbed into the top two EV sales positions, overtaking the Tesla Model 3.

Later that year, BYD introduced two more budget-focused models- the Atto 1 EV and the Atto 2 SUV- with early deliveries already underway and more than 500 Atto 2 units sold in December alone.

Long-Term Ambitions

December also marked a major milestone as the company produced its 15 millionth new-energy vehicle, achieved 31 years after BYD first began manufacturing battery cells.

Looking ahead, international markets are expected to play a crucial role in the company’s strategy. Continued expansion into both existing and new regions will likely be necessary if BYD hopes to challenge Toyota’s global leadership within the next decade.

The 1.3-million-unit goal may represent only the starting point, with the company anticipating even higher overseas volumes in future years.
