Australia’s Police K9 Units: Designed for Performance, Built for Welfare

Man’s best friend is also one of the Australian Police Force’s most valuable assets in the fight against crime. From tracking offenders to detecting narcotics, Police K9 units play a critical role in keeping our communities safe. Ensuring the safety and welfare of these highly trained animals while they are on duty is paramount, and it’s a responsibility Autosafe is proud to support.

Autosafe has had the privilege of developing and installing specialised K9 transport cages fitted inti Utilities and Vans, fitted into Ford Ranger ute’s. From the outset, animal welfare was the single most important consideration. Our development team worked closely with Police vet’s and K9 handlers to ensure each solution maximised comfort, safety, and ventilation, while still allowing for rapid deployment in operational environments.

The cages are manufactured from aluminium and over-decorated to resist corrosion and the acidic properties of animal urine. Precision laser-cut panels provide optimal airflow, while the dual-dog configuration includes removable floor mats for easy cleaning. For flexibility, a removable partition wall allows the cage to be converted to accommodate a larger dog when required.

To improve accessibility and servicing, the cage is mounted on a heavy-duty roller system with multiple lock-out points. This allows the unit to slide out onto the tailgate for safe access. When necessary, the cage can be completely removed from the vehicle, providing clear access to critical components such as the air-conditioning system. Despite its strength and durability, the cage is lightweight enough to be removed by four people.

Temperature control is a critical priority for K9 transport. Autosafe designed a custom rear-canopy air-conditioning system that delivers cool, filtered fresh air directly into the cage area. The system operates on an auxiliary battery, which charges while the vehicle is running and continues to power the AC when the vehicle is not running. Fully serviceable filters ensure reliable performance in demanding conditions.
